Installing spring/shim kit on ruger GP100 IT was easy Trigger pull has been reduced significantly!! I polished all the parts like in the video. man i love the trigger pull. thank you very much!
I purchased this kit for an upgrade to my Ruger GP100 revolver. I had long ago installed a reduced power hammer spring which was all that was available years ago. I have purchased 2 other kits, both for Ruger LCP & LC9 from Mcarbo with great success after installation. The end results of this kit produced the advertised percentage of reduction, not always to be the advertised poundage shown on the video where this kit is installed in the SP101. My end results, polishing all internals included are 5-5.5 lbs double action, 2.5 lbs single action pull on the inexpensive Weaver gauge. The action is SO SMOOTH and consistent now, enabling all of my shooting to be faster on sight recovery and targets using only double-action trigger pull. The Video makes it nearly impossible for any installer not familiar with pistol smithing to make an error, from beginning to end! The spring wire material and machining flat on both ends is a huge bonus. No matter how fast you are for disassy. and re-assy.; the polishing will take you some time if done correctly and with care, so prepare to spend about 2-3 hours, depending on the surfaces of your internal components.
I bought this kit and watched the video and followed all instructions on an SP101. I highly recommend the YouTube video as he does a great job in it. It is as good as the Jerry Miculek video on Smiths. I then tested this kit on a lot of different factory rounds and hand-loads of both 38s and 357s. Out of a little over 300 rounds, I had two misfires. One was with CCI SPP and the other with CCI SP Magnum Primer. These are known to be hard primers but I load them and wanted to test everything. I put the factory hammer spring back in and ran a little over 500 more round through it of both 38 and 357s with lots of factory ammo and every different combination of re-load I do for these and it worked great. In my opinion, this is a perfect kit if you follow the video for a competition gun using Federal primers. After polishing, the trigger return spring is perfect and all of the shims were perfect. The reason that I only gave it only 4 stars is because I think that the included hammer spring is too light for a self defense gun and I would recommend keeping the stock hammer spring for a SD gun. Even with the factory hammer spring, the trigger is much lighter and extremely smooth. I do not have a trigger gauge, but the numbers that he quoted on the video seem fairly reasonable as to what happened with mine. I would guess that my trigger started at a very rough 12ish lbs. After polishing like the video and installing kit, it was probably around 6ish and very smooth. I would guess that it is now around 9ish and still very smooth and I am still extremely happy with this kit but I personally do not recommend using the included hammer spring for a self defense gun as the main reason I use revolvers for self defense is I want 100% reliability no matter what ammo is thrown in it. 99% reliable may be fine for you semi-auto guys, but not for me. I still highly recommend the kit and especially the video.
I am very happy that I am able to get the improvement that I did, for such a reasonable price. I purchased the polishing kit along with my spring kit. I followed the instructions in the very easy to follow video. Although I don't have a trigger pull guage, I can tell that there is a noticeable difference in pull weight and smoothness of my trigger in double and single action. I don't believe that there was a 50% reduction in pull weight, like is advertised, but I wasn't sure I wanted that much anyway. My sp101 is a carry gun and I didn't want the trigger to be too light. I just wanted a significant reduction. The hammer and trigger spring kit gave me just what I wanted. The trigger pull is much more manageable and conducive for accurate shooting in double action. In single action it is on par for a competitive target gun. The trigger pull is much smoother than before. To sum it up I don't think you can get this much improvement for such a low cost by any other means available. Thank you Mcarbo!
Perfect easy install
The springs and shims are high quality. My Ruger sp101 functions flawlessly. The detailed video was invaluable. I would not have attempted the trigger job without the video. Keep up the good job guys
Sp101 Trigger Job Bought my SP101 new in 1989, 3” barrel, .38 Special, its first year of production. Back then I put about two hundred rounds through it. It’s been stored clean since the early 90s and again sees the light of day. It had a nice SA trigger pull, but DA was a beast. So I ordered your spring & polishing kits. Quick delivery! The trigger guard detached much easier than I’ve seen on Youtube. I wrapped cloth around the trigger assembly like you suggested (just in case), pulled the trigger and the pall spring/plunger stayed in place - a nice surprise - then I removed it with tweezers. Happy to say all the guts were fairly burr-free, but I did the polishing job anyway per your excellent video (no sanding), and installed your trigger and hammer shims. The hammer dog pivot pin is unusual: it’s a tube, not solid (you can see through it). Maybe this is unique to the original models? It wouldn’t press out with the punch, so I left it and the hammer dog in place until I know more. Otherwise the project went smoothly, just like your video. Without a gauge, all I can say is the DA pull is vastly improved! Looking forward to the range when it finally reopens (Covid-19). I have enough left over from your kit to slick up my Pietta 1860 Colt Army 44 cal. black powder revolver next, and my Pedersoli Brown Bess musket. Thank you for an excellent kit and the fantastic video.
First time I used one of these kits. Ordered and installed for a customer; the customer was delighted with the trigger pull reduction. I will stock this item in my shop inventory. Jim Wilson Custom Gunsmithing, Inc
Fair price on a good quality kit, but the icing on the cake was the very detailed video showing every step of the disassembly, polishing & parts swap, and reassembly. Made my tired old SP101 feel like a custom gun with the lighter pull and slop-free action
Purchased this kit for my sp101 that I bought in 06 and it has made a world of difference. Installation was some what difficult for me due to arthritis in my hands. That's said it was not difficult if you follow their youtube video on how to do it. Great purchase on my part.
Put the trigger kit in for a customer and they loved it , great kit everything you need to make a good gun great !!
Followed the video to do the full polish, spring, and shim install and it turned out great. Very smooth and lightened up the single snd double action as expected. Between this and my LCP max (spring snd trigger upgrades) I am very pleased.
Following the video and installing the kit in my SP101 made more difference in the trigger than I ever suspected. Took it to the range yesterday and shot four boxes, all different manufacturers, without one snag. No light primer strikes at all. Made it a different revolver!
I watched and rewatched the video before diving in. The disassembly was a breeze, and I did my best to keep the small parts separate and organized. Still, after polishing and cleaning, I messed up on one step: the detent/springs for the hammer dog and pawl are nearly the same size. I installed each in the WRONG hole, and the revolver would not function when reassembled. Not knowing what else to try, I reversed them, and sure enough all was well. So, keep them separate and labeled! Haven't had the gun to the range yet, but the DA is butter smooth; SA feels about the same. Good luck!
Install is easy, cleaning up what Ruger doesn’t is a little more work. The trigger pull is now very smooth double or single action. The grease does a great job of holding shims in place while you reassemble. Overall this is a great simple way to improve your Ruger. If (when I) get another Ruger I’ll be ordering again! Well done!
I installed this kit with the help of the M*CARBO video on YouTube. I was very impressed with the product quality and the fantastic improvement it made to my firearm.
